Under Florida law, e-mail addresses are public records. If you do not want your e-mail address released in response to a public-records request, do not send electronic mail to this entity. Instead, contact this office by phone or in writing.
Local Background Check
A local (Walton County) background check can be requested in person, by phone, fax, or email. A background check can be completed on a form used by the requester or the department has our own pre-made form. Information needed in order to accurately complete a background check includes: name, dob, ssn, alias, and driver license number. All information is not mandatory. The more information obtained helps to decipher between common names. Local background checks are requested and used for several purposes: employment, volunteer work, housing, adoptions, etc...
Fingerprinting

In addition to live scan fingerprinting of felons and sex offenders, the Walton County Sheriff's Office provides live scan fingerprinting for concealed weapons permit applicants, and ink-print fingerprinting for employment purposes. Parents who want ink-prints for their children can obtain those prints for their own records and/or for cooperation with the Missing Children Information Clearinghouse. Ink-prints are also provided for adults and children, for legal or civil actions, such as name-change requests. Ink fingerprints can be obtained at the following WCSO locations Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Criminal Registration
Felony Registration
Anyone who has been convicted of a felony, within 48 hours of entering Walton County, is required to register with the Walton County Sheriff's Office. The registration process includes updating of information, live scan fingerprinting and taking of a digital photograph. This service is offered at the Sheriff's Office located at 752 Triple G Road in DeFuniak Springs, Fla., during normal business hours Monday through Friday.
Sexual Offender Registration
Convicted Sexual Offenders and Predators in Walton County are required to keep the Sheriff's Office notified of their current home address, any temporary addresses, business and personal travel plans, home and business telephone numbers, cell phone numbers, employment information, any contact with area daycare providers, schools and campuses, vehicle and vessel use information, email addresses and instant-message usernames. Specific court orders may prevent offenders and predators from contact with certain children or online computer use. At the time of each registration, each offender or predator is required to sign and acknowledge that he/she understands thirteen offender obligations. If the offender or predator violates any of the obligations, he/she commits a third-degree felony. The registration process includes updating of information, live scan fingerprinting and taking of a digital photograph.

Who must register?
Sexual Offenders: Currently, offenders who reside in Walton County are required to come to the WCSO and update information and provide a current photograph every three months to six months.
Sexual Predators: Currently, predators who reside in Walton County are required to come to the Sheriff's Office and update information and provide a current photograph every three months.
Offender Checks: The Sheriff's Office verifies residential addresses of sexual offenders and predators by monthly unannounced visits to their listed addresses.
City ordinances and Florida Statutes restrict the location of the residences of persons designated as sexual offenders and predators. City of DeFuniak Springs Ordinance 752 and City of Freeport Ordinances 07-12 and 07-13 further restrict the activities of offenders and predators.
