On April 17, 2013, at approximately 2:30 p.m. the Criminal Interdiction Unit of the Walton County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 10 in the area of mile marker 84. The investigation began when deputies noticed a vehicle following too close to other vehicles. Law enforcement stopped the suspect vehicle and made contact with the driver and passenger. The odor of marijuana was noted by deputies upon their initial contact with those in the vehicle. When asked about the smell, the driver admitted to marijuana being in the vehicle.
A K-9 was deployed and alerted on the suspect’s vehicle and camper. One passenger, Bryan J. Morgan, 31, of New Orleans, LA, admitted to possessing the following: 30 grams of marijuana, a marijuana pipe, and a digital scale. Another passenger, Kristen Marshall, 33, of New Orleans, LA, was found in Marshall’s possession: 30 grams of Marijuana, 2.5 Oxycodone pills, 1 Soma pill, ½ of tablet believed to be Hydrocodone, 2 pieces of Xanax bars, 8 small pills believed to be MDMA, 45 hits of LSD, a small amount of methamphetamine.
Due to Morgan’s cooperation in the investigation, he was charged with Possession of Marijuana less than 20 grams and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He was issued a Notice to Appear. Marshall was charged with Possession of Marijuana over 20 grams, Possession of a Controlled Substance without a Prescription, Trafficking in LSD (more than 1 gram), and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. She was transported and booked into the Walton County Department of Corrections.
On April 17, 2013, deputies assigned to the Criminal Interdiction Unit of the Walton County Sheriff’s Office made a significant arrest and seizure while patrolling Interstate 10. The investigation began at approximately 10:25 a.m. when law enforcement stopped a vehicle driven by Joshua R. Smith, 33, of Ocean Springs, MS, for speeding and illegal window tint. During the traffic stop, a K-9 was deployed and alerted on the suspect’s vehicle. A search was conducted and deputies located 16 grams of marijuana, 1 gram of hash, 8 grams of Psilocybin mushrooms, 3 hits of suspected LSD, 12 Xanax tablets, digital scales and a marijuana pipe.
Smith was arrested and charged with Possession of Marijuana less than 20 grams, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Smith was transported and booked into the Walton County Department of Corrections.
On April 17, 2013, investigators with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office arrived at 209 Mosley Lane, DeFuniak Springs, Florida, the residence of Zanda Brock, 55, and her boyfriend Steven Downing, 49, in reference to complaints of methamphetamines being manufactured at this residence. While speaking with Brock, investigators observed items associated with the “Shake and Bake” method of manufacturing methamphetamines.
A search warrant was obtained for the residence and investigators located three active “Shake and Bake” cook vessels containing a trafficking weight (over 200 grams) of methamphetamine. Investigators also located chemicals used in the methamphetamine manufacturing process, smoking devices, and digital scales.
Both Brock and Downing were at the residence when the search warrant was executed. Subsequently, the two were placed under arrest and charged with Manufacturing Methamphetamine (2nd Degree Felony), Trafficking in Methamphetamine (1st Degree Felony), and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (1st Degree Misdemeanor).
Brock and Downing were transported and booked into the Walton County Department of Corrections.
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and the Walton County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) is looking for some talented young artists to help us bring awareness during this special time. WCSO is hosting the First Annual “Family Fun” art contest. Children are encouraged to share through two dimensional artwork (ie drawing, coloring, painting, etc) ideas that display what safe family fun activities consists of.
There will be three age categories: 5-10, 11-14, and 15-17. Photos will be shared on our Facebook page. Top entries in each age group wins a gift card from Blast Arcade and Laser Maze in Sandestin. The overall winner will also have their drawing created into a poster to display in all Walton County Sheriff’s Office substations.
Submissions may be dropped off at the WCSO main office, 752 Triple G Road, DeFuniak Springs, FL, or the Santa Rosa Beach substation, 133 Sheriff Drive, between the hours of 8-5, Monday-Friday. Please include name of child and age, as well as a contact number for the parent/guardian on the back of the artwork. We ask that the child reside in Walton County or attend Walton County Schools.
