On March 6, 2013, investigators with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) began an investigation into an embezzlement complaint. According to the complaint filed with WCSO, Wesley Allen Shelton, 36, of Santa Rosa Beach, was an employee working for Sandcastle Escapes between 4/23/10 through 4/25/12. During his time of employment, evidence was gathered to show Shelton had engaged in a scheme to defraud, by periodically writing several checks to himself from the business account of Sandcastle Escapes totaling $24,945. It was discovered that Shelton had no legitimate reason to write checks to himself.
Investigators with the WCSO applied for an arrest warrant and on 5/1/13, Shelton was arrested and charged with Engaging in a Scheme to Defraud (a second degree felony) and Grand Theft over $20,000 (also a second degree felony). Shelton was booked into the Walton County Department of Corrections with a bond amount of $25,000.
WCSO would like to announce its new addition to the Volunteer program. The Beach Volunteer program was created from a suggestion by Walton County resident Frank Day. This new volunteer group will be assisting both the Walton County Sheriff’s Office and Walton County Code enforcement office with identifying county ordinance violations and crimes that might occur on the beaches of Walton County. Sheriff Adkinson was stated “This is a great opportunity for both the Sheriff’ Office and citizens to work together to make our beaches safer.”
The new volunteers have received training in reporting potential violation to both the WCSO and the code enforcement office. They also received a t-shirt that will readily identify them to the public and officers responding to their calls.
