Computer Crime & Cybercrime
Since the invention and further advancement of the computer, criminals have taken the business of commiting crimes to a new frontier. There are basically two sides to computer crimes, traditional versus modern. The traditional includes criminals that use technology to assist in the crime, such as bank scams, child pornography, drug distribution & tracking, and fraud. The modern includes viruses, hacking, and phishing. These two worlds have led law enforcement into new untouched territory.
Several federal and state agencies have either been created or have designated specific units to handle cybercrime. The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) is a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National White Collar Crime Center. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement created the Florida Computer Crime Center (FC3) in October 1998. Like the IC3, the FC3 has a multitude of information and resources available for everyone.
