As we celebrate our nation’s independence, the Walton County Sheriff’s Office will be out in force to ensure the safety of our residents and visitors. The Sheriff’s Office will be enforcing DUI laws and wants to remind everyone to think “safety first”. If you plan to drink alcohol, be sure to have a designated driver. This also includes if you will be boating during the holiday week. Sheriff Adkinson encourages residents and visitors to have fun, but be safe and responsible. Citizens who observe threats to public safety should call 911 or our non-emergency number at 1.850.892.8111.
Also, did you know you could face up to a year in jail and a $1000 fine for illegal fireworks in Florida? Illegal firework’s is a first degree misdemeanor. If you have purchased fireworks that lifts off, flies or explodes – it is against the law. The WCSO and the South Walton Fire District will be working together to strictly enforce the law and insure citizen safety. Sparklers and glow worms are legal but please supervise young children as they still pose a hazard and can cause burns and fires. The best way to enjoy fireworks is to check out the professional displays offered in our area.
If you want more information on fire work safety, please visit the State of Florida’s Fire Marshal’s Office website at http://www.myfloridacfo.com/sitePages/newsroom/pressRelease.aspx?ID=4084. Also, South Walton Fire Department has a great PSA you can listen to at http://www.swfd.org/fireworks.php.
Enjoy your July 4th Holiday Week safely!
